Shake Rattle and Roll

Dear friends!  This is a public service message brought to you by Anxiety.

These are maps of the latest earthquakes around the world (click images above to go to updated real-time map). They are from the US Geological Survey website, and they're pretty fascinating.  Today's earthquake  in New Zealand brought back memories of my daily freak-out when I lived in Berkeley, half a block from one of the most dangerous faults in America, in an unretrofitted building, on the third floor. When one block away, a primary school was closed because its location was deemed too dangerous. Moral of the story: PLEASE KEEP AN EARTHQUAKE KIT.  Even better, donate to your local Search and Rescue team or volunteer for training. It's nice to have a reminder at this wintery time of year why I am glad to be anywhere but California.

I know only three people read this, and only one of us currently lives in California.  The message still stands!

San Francisco, 1906 (nice hats are a must for such occasions)
From the SF Chronicle

Maybe instead of trying to work for the BBC I should go into rescue dog training... for all of those British earthquakes... (Deep breaths...)  I am going to sit in the dark and listen to calming whale sounds for a while.
